His love of life overflows into his art, music, family, and friendships. I thought to myself, “wow, I’ve been invited into Jason’s inner circle, I must be cool too!” My favorite part of working with Jason is that I now call him my friend. I shall always remember the day Jason invited me to a “gong bath” at his studio with an array of his friends. Jason’s designs are “cool ” they are strong and soft-with hard lines and soft curves-lyrical and inviting, and exactly the message Millennium Park wished to express to the visitors from Chicago and the world. He was the guy! During my tenure, Jason executed every design project for Millennium Park with his signature flair and enthusiasm. It turns out I found the star in my orbit! Jason’s star shone brighter when he was subsequently tasked with designing the Millennium Park Foundation website and App. When Jason presented his designs to the Foundation Board of Directors, there was no pushback that was a phenomenon to me! I had supervised similar projects in previous lives in which I experienced months of edits and redesigns. At the time, the Foundation was looking to redesign the Park’s logo. I met Jason when I was working for the Millennium Park Foundation. He impressed me as a decision-maker and extremely confident. It only took a short time to learn how talented this cool dude was-talented beyond measure, artistically gifted, organized-which is music to my mind. My first impression was he was super “cool,” as in hip, but more importantly “cool” as in calm, cool, and collected. Jason entered my orbit through a well-respected art consultant. As JNL Graphic Design closes its doors, we want to celebrate the remarkable contributions by Jason and Leslie with the voices of many who admire their work as clients, collaborators, and friends.įormer director of Special Projects, Millennium Park Inc. To say that JNL Graphic Design and Jason have been hugely important at a professional and personal level for all of us would be an understatement. He presented during our inaugural MAS Context: Analog event in 2011, co-organized the inaugural edition of the Corkins Exchange in 2012 with us and Corkins Lodge, gave a tour of JNL Graphic Design in 2015, and hosted our exhibition on La Ricarda in his gallery, Lawrence&Clark. Besides the topic-based issues, Jason also designed the Nocturnal Landscapes publication that accompanied the exhibition of the same name that we organized in 2019. He contributed his poetry to our Boundary issue, contributed illustrations to our Surveillance and Debate issues, and designed our Hidden issue as well as an article for our Repetition issue. We at MAS Context have had the pleasure of working with Jason on many occasions: Jason is part of our board of advisors, designed the cover of our first issue, More, and was interviewed as part of our inaugural issue. Founded by Jason Pickleman and Leslie Bodenstein, their studio defined the visual and cultural landscape of Chicago and beyond. Established in 1992, the Chicago-based JNL Graphic Design closed on May 31, 2023.
