All my Sigma lenses shoot warmer than my Nikon lenses, and if you know me, i’m all about being more efficient when it comes to editing. The color was more “on” than with my Sigma. It was small so I could see myself using it for more personal things. There’s less glass than the Sigma lens so it was actually a little faster than the Sigma. This was the first time I’ve ever shot with the 35 f1.8 and I was surprised. They’re smaller, not as heavy as other lenses, but they still do a killer job. I’m always surprised when I get to hold one of Nikon’s f1.8 line. This is definitely the biggest downfall of the Sigma line, without a doubt. I did for comparison with these though, so we’ll check that out later. It can be a soft focus, and because of it, I rarely if EVER shoot it as f1.4. I should probably do it more often than I do. One thing to note, similar to the 85, I HAVE to calibrate this lens. I’ll use it when I want to mix things up, or show more of the scene (like on the dance floor), but I don’t use this lens 90% of the time like some do. I can’t necessarily have my clients in the corners of the rule of thirds like normal, but this lens usually looks best with them right in the middle. The 35 mm length isn’t for everyone, and I have to think more about it when I use it. It was one of the first prime lenses I ever bought, and though I definitely wouldn’t say it’s my work horse like a lot of photographers out there, I have a soft spot for it. The Z mount comes in at the middle, with the Nikon F mount at the tail end. With all the mirrorless smaller lenses coming out, this one is a monster in comparison. You can tell they are sturdy lenses, but some people don’t like that. If you haven’t gotten a hold of any of the ART line, you’re missing out. Here’s my first impressions of these lenses. I’ve been so impressed by the f1.8 lenses by Nikon, I didn’t think it was necessary to go to the f1.4. If you go back and read my 85 mm comparison, my 85 definitely held it’s own. I could rent the Nikon 1.4 and compare that to my Sigma 35, but I don’t think that’s necessary. I know some might say “Misty, you’re not comparing apples to apples with these lenses.” And you’re right. I’ll also throw in the Nikon Z mount 35 f1.8 for fun- because why not. Here’s my showdown between the Nikon 35 mm 1.8G vs Sigma 35 mm 1.4 ART. With all this spare time i’ve had on my hands, I knew I wanted to do another, but with another one of my favorite lenses. One of my most popular blog posts is my showdown between the Nikon and Sigma 85 lenses.
